New Releases for July 20!

It’s New Release Tuesday! This week we’ve got loads of vintage catalog stuff from Kino, the latest attack from Jigsaw, Willy Wonka in 4K, a Cannon Films documentary, and more!

32 MALASANA STREET (2020)

A two-hour tribute to the homophobic human pile of trash, Billy Graham. The prolific purveroyr of hate speech inspired millions of his followers to “follow Christ” and hate those who are different from them. First one to rent this is a rotten egg. (DVD)

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS: THE MUSICAL (2018)

Featuring the gorgeous music and lyrics of George and Ira Gershwin, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS tells the impassioned story of art, friendship and love between American GI, Jerry Mulligan, and Lise, a beautiful young dancer in the ‘City of Light’. (DVD)

BRIDE COMES HOME (1935)

Starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray, THE BRIDE COMES HOME is a screwball comedy set against the backdrop of Chicago during the Depression. At the center of a romantic triangle is Jeanette Desmereau (Colbert), a socialite left penniless by the stock market crash who takes a job as a writer for a men’s magazine . Her two on-again, off-again suitors just happen to be her hard-boiled editor Cyrus Anderson (MacMurray) and the company’s wealthy owner, Jack Bristow (Robert Young). Complicating matters is the fact that Cyrus was originally hired to be Jack’s bodyguard and is constantly fighting his boss’s battles for him. Tempers flare, opposites attract and true love wins out at the end in this fast-paced delight featuring memorable comic turns by supporting players Edgar Kennedy, Donald Meek and William Collier Sr. (Blu-ray)

BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES: SERIES 7

Detectives Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) and Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) return to uncover more macabre goings on in the quiet, picturesque, murder-ridden town of Brokenwood. In Series 7, they investigate the murder of an antiques show host, a death at a health retreat, a deadly bank robbery, a killing at a farmer’s market, a fatal fire at a historic cinema, and 1970s-themed party that turns lethal. “New Zealand’s tongue-in-cheek answer to Midsomer Murders” (The New Zealand Herald). CODE 3: COMPLETE SERIES 

In 1957, Hal Roach Studios and producer Ben Fox brought the fast-paced police drama Code 3 to television. It starred Richard Travis as Sheriff George Barrett of the Los Angeles County Police Department, with Denver Pyle as Sgt. Murchison and Fredd Wayne as Sgt. Bill Hollis. Like its sister series Dragnet, Code 3 featured true crime cases – this time from the files of the search and rescue branch of the Los Angeles Police Department – always “changing the names to protect the innocent.” At the end of most of the broadcasts, the real-life Sheriff of Los Angeles County, Eugene W. Biscailuz, made an appearance to recap that night’s adventure. (DVD)

DEAD & BURIED (1981)

The creators of ALIEN bring a new terror to Earth! In this gruesome zombie gorefest, something very strange is happening in the quiet coastal village of Potters Bluff. DIE IN A GUNFIGHT (2021)

Their forbidden love will trigger the dominoes that will draw in Mukul, Ben’s best friend, who owes him a life debt; Terrence, Mary’s would-be protector-turned-stalker; Wayne, an Aussie hitman with an open mind and a code of ethics; and his free-spirited girlfriend, Barbie. As fists and bullets fly, it becomes clear that violent delights will have violent ends. (DVD)

DRACULA (1979)

A man washes ashore in England after a shipwreck and is found by Mina Van Helsing (Jan Francis). The man introduces himself as Count Dracula (Frank Langella) of Transylvania, and proceeds to integrate himself into the lives of Mina and her friend Lucy Seward (Kate Nelligan). However, when Mina dies and her father, Prof. Van Helsing (Laurence Olivier), attributes her death to a vampire, evidence indicates that Count Dracula is the monster, and Lucy is his next target. DREAM HORSE (2020)

The true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely racehorse bred by small-town bartender Jan Vokes. With very little money and no experience, Jan convinces her neighbors to chip in their meager earnings to help raise Dream and compete with the racing elites. Their investment pays off as Dream rises through the ranks and becomes a beacon of hope for their struggling community. Starring the always phenomenal Toni Collette. (DVD)

GANGS OF LONDON: SEASON 1

For 20 years, Finn Wallace (Colm Meaney) was the most powerful criminal in London. Billions of pounds flowed through his organisation each year. But now he’s dead – and nobody knows who ordered the hit. GILDED LILY (1935)

An often overlooked comedy gem, THE GILDED LILY marks the first teaming of screen legends Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray and is the epitome of a New York City urban fantasy. Newspaper reporter Peter Dawes (MacMurray) and stenographer Marilyn David (Colbert), nicknamed Lynn, meet regularly on a park bench sharing popcorn along with their dreams. Their budding romance is soon threatened by a chance meeting between Marilyn and Charles Gray (Ray Milland), an English nobleman visiting America. Marilyn’s fantasy of landing a handsome millionaire becomes a reality as she is pursued by Charles in a whirlwind courtship, leaving Peter fighting to reclaim his love. When the press learns of the affair, it turns into an international tabloid scandal for everyone involved. Directed by Wesley Ruggles, THE GILDED LILY helped launch the career of Fred MacMurray who would make six more films with Claudette Colbert over the years. (Blu-ray)

GO-GO BOYS: THE STORY OF CANNON FILMS (2014)

The incredibly true story story about Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus’, two Israeli-born cousins, who in pursuit of the American Dream, turned the Hollywood power structure upside down, producing over 300 films and becoming the most powerful independent film company in the world. Directed by Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee Hilla Medalia (After the Storm), The Go-Go Boys is an up close and personal documentary that examines the complex relationship between two contradictory personalities whose combined force fueled their success and eventual collapse. Featuring interviews with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michael Dudikoff, Eli Roth, Boaz Davidson along with Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus themselves, as well as archive footage of Sylvester Stallone, Charles Bronson and Chuck Norris in the definitive documentary about Cannon Films. THE INITIATION (2020)

During a university’s pledge week, the carefree partying turns deadly serious when a star athlete is found impaled in his dorm. The murder ignites a spree of sinister social media messages, sweeping the students and police into a race against time to uncover the truth behind the school’s dark secret. (DVD)

J.C. (1972)

Jesus Christ is born again on Earth. But his father is a hardcore Southern Baptist, and during his teen years, Jesus rebels, joining a biker gang and leading an LSD-fueled pilgrimage to the West to fight the establishment. Anyone who adopts the initials J.C. as a nickname probably has a Messianic complex. In Iron Horseman, the hero, the head of a motorcycle gang, wigs out on LSD. While day-tripping, he has a prophetic religious vision. This leads him back to his home town, where he challenges the local church leaders-even unto knocking down chairs and tables in righteous anger, just like…you know. (DVD)

JAKOB’S WIFE (2020)

Anne, married to a small-town Minister, feels her life has been shrinking over the past 30 years. Encountering “The Master” brings her a new sense of power and an appetite to live bolder. THE JERK (1979)

One of the best and clearest examples of the genius of a young Steve Martin, helmed here by the magnificent Carl Reiner, THE JERK remains one of the funniest films of its era and holds up quite well to this day. Navin (Steve Martin) believes he was born a poor black child in Mississippi. He is, however, actually white. Upon figuring this out, he heads north to St. Louis to find himself. After landing a job at a gas station, Navin is excited to discover his name printed in the new phone book. This ratification of his existence leads him from one misadventure to another — as he invents gadgets, dodges bullets, joins the carnival and seeks love in the arms of beautiful Marie (Bernadette Peters). LA PISCINE (1969)

The bright sun of the French Riviera is deceptive in this alluring work of slow-burn suspense from thriller specialist Jacques Deray and legendary screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière. Formerly one of European cinema’s most iconic real-life couples, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider reunited for this film, bringing a palpable erotic chemistry to their performances as the bronzed and beautiful vacationers whose summer holiday on the Côte d’Azur is interrupted by the arrival of an old acquaintance (Maurice Ronet) and his eighteen-year-old daughter (Jane Birkin)—unleashing a gathering wave of sexual tension, jealousy, and sudden violence. LEONA (2021)

An intimate, insightful, and moving film that tells the story of a young Jewish woman from Mexico City who finds herself torn between her family and her forbidden love. Ripe with all the drama and interpersonal conflicts of a Jane Austen novel, watching her negotiate the labyrinth of familial pressure, religious precedent, and her own burgeoning sentiment is both painful and beautiful – there are no easy choices to be made and the viewer travels back and forth with her as she struggles with her heart to take the best path. LIMBO (2020)

An offbeat observation of the refugee experience. On a fictional remote Scottish island, a group of new arrivals await the results of their asylum claims. Among them is Omar, a young Syrian musician burdened by the weight of his grandfather’s oud, which he has carried all the way from his homeland. (Blu-ray)

NANA (1926)

A government official, Count Muffat, falls under the spell of Nana, a young actress. She becomes his mistress, living in the sumptuous apartment which he provides for her. Instead of elevating herself to Muffat’s level, however, Nana drags the poor man down to hers—in the end, both lives have been utterly destroyed. (Blu-ray)

NIGHT OF THE EAGLES (1989)

In World War II Germany, two young men, one, an ardent Nazi, and the other, a secret anti-Nazi, are in love with the same woman, the daughter of a wealthy banker. The two join the Army, and the young woman becomes a nightclub singer. Eventually she joins the Army too, to entertain the troops, but circumstances soon result in her entire world being changed. PLAINSMAN (1936)

In this Western from renowned director Cecil B. DeMille, Wild Bill Hickok (Gary Cooper) is caught in the midst of a battle between Indians and General Custer’s troops. Having secured the release of Calamity Jane (Jean Arthur) from her Native American captors, Wild Bill aims to settle a score with the greedy gun merchant who armed the Indians. With the help of Buffalo Bill Cody (James Ellison), he gets his man — but pays a price in the process. (Blu-ray)

RED (2019)

Award-winning stage and screen actor Alfred Molina reprises his critically acclaimed performance as the American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko in playwright John Logan’s Tony Award-winning 2010 play Red. Under the watchful gaze of his young assistant—and the growing competitive presence of a new generation of artists—Rothko takes on his greatest career challenge yet: to create a definitive series of paintings for the Philip Johnson-designed Four Seasons restaurant in architect Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Seagram Building. Molina is joined by rising star Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away With Murder) as Rothko’s assistant Ken. Original Broadway director Michael Grandage returns to direct this 2018 West End revival, the first U.K. production since the play’s 2009 world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse. (DVD)

SARAH T. – PORTRAIT OF A TEENAGE ALCOHOLIC (1975)

Sarah Travis (Linda Blair, post-THE EXORCIST) is an average teenager who is introduced to drinking alcohol at local parties. As a means to cope with problems in her life, most notably her parents’ divorce, Sarah starts to drink regularly and tries to keep her addiction a secret, even from her boyfriend (Mark Hamill, pre-STAR WARS). Eventually, Sarah’s increasingly severe drinking almost leads to tragedy, and she enters Alcoholics Anonymous, beginning an ongoing struggle to get sober and stay that way. (Blu-ray)

SHAMELESS: COMPLETE 11TH SEASON (2020)

It’s last call for The Gallaghers and you’re invited to the party to end all parties. After a decade of dysfunction, the South Side’s favorite clan is going out with the biggest bang ever. It’s going to be a wild last ride, but changes are coming that will force each of them to either step up or hit the road. And while devolving may come more naturally than evolving in a family where excess never gets old, they know one thing for certain — Gallaghers may grow up, but they’ll never grow apart. (DVD)

SILAT WARRIORS: DEED OF DEATH (2021)

Ali and Fatimah are frustrated with their younger brother, Mat Arip, when he fails to come home with the grant of their inherited land. Ali will have to find Mat Arip, who has fallen in with the wrong crowd and takes part in illegal gambling and racing, and bring him home to their father, Pak Nayan. (DVD)

SPANISH PRINCESS: SEASON 2 (2020)

SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW (2021)

Another passion project from producer and star Chris Rock, SPIRAL is a spin-off of the SAW series of modern horror films. This time, while working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran, brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks and his rookie partner take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game. (Blu-ray, DVD)

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY – SEASON 3 (2020)

After following Commander Burnham into the wormhole in the second season finale, season three of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY finds the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery landing in an unknown future far from the home they once knew. Now living in a time filled with uncertainty, the U.S.S. Discovery crew, along with the help of some new friends, must work together to restore hope to the Federation. (DVD)

STARGIRL: SEASON 1 (2020)

DC’s Stargirl is an American superhero television series created by Geoff Johns that premiered on streaming service DC Universe. It is based on the DC Comics superhero Courtney Whitmore created by Johns and Lee Moder. One decade after nearly all of the Justice Society of America (JSA) were killed in a battle against the Injustice Society of America (ISA), high school student Courtney Whitmore discovers the Cosmic Staff of Starman and, upon learning that her stepfather Pat Dugan used to be Starman’s sidekick, becomes the inspiration for a whole new generation of superheroes. (Blu-ray)

A STRANGER IS WATCHING (1982)

Appearing on Blu-ray for the very first time comes A STRANGER IS WATCHING, from the director of FRIDAY THE 13TH. In this gritty American horror film, a depraved psychopath kidnaps the 11-year old daughter and girlfriend of a man whose wife he brutally raped and killed in front of them years earlier. While being held captive in a bunker below Grand Central Station, the two of them plot their escape while the police try to track down their kidnapper. (Blu-ray)

SUPERGIRL: SEASON 5 (2020)

Meet Kara Danvers, aka Kara Zor-El, who escaped the doomed planet Krypton at age 12 and was raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danverses. Years later, Kara lives in National City working for fierce taskmaster Cat Grant alongside her friends, IT technician Winslow “Winn” Schott and photographer James Olsen. SUPERVILLAIN: THE MAKING OF TEKASHI 6IX9INE (2021)

This is the unauthorized documentary series on the most notorious rapper of all time, Tekashi 6ix9ine. The journey begins with a first-gen Mexican and Puerto Rican kid from Bushwick, Brooklyn named Daniel Hernandez. Deep childhood trauma, a broken education system and a gentrifying neighborhood set the stage for his bizarre transformation into hip hop’s greatest villain, propelling him to global fame, and a terrifying downfall. Emotionally charged interviews and never before heard audio unveil a story that could only be told in the digital era. (DVD)

THUNDERBOLT (1929)

A criminal known as Thunderbolt is imprisoned and facing execution. Into the next cell is placed Bob Moran, an innocent man who has been framed and who is in love with Thunderbolt’s girl. Thunderbolt hopes to stave off the execution long enough to kill young Moran for romancing his girl. (Blu-ray, DVD)

TIME GUARDIAN (1987)

In the distant future, the human race nears extinction and a new race of beast-like creatures rule the earth. The few surviving people live in the City, a huge protected construction with the ability to travel in both space and time. The City travels back to our time to save humanity. (Blu-ray)

UNCONQUERED (1947)

The group is led by Rick Grimes, who was a police officer in the old world. As their situation grows more and more grim, the group’s desperation to survive pushes them to do almost anything to stay alive. (DVD)

WHIRLPOOL OF FATE (1925)

After her father’s death and her uncle having drunk all the inheritance, Virginia is left alone. She is accepted by a family of bohemians but a quarrel between the bohemians and the peasants coerce her to flee the peasants’ riot. She is then helped by Raynal who falls in love with her but is too shy to tell her. Sheltered by his father, Virginia is robbed by her uncle of the money Raynal gave her to pay the bill in the village. He and his son then start to consider her a thief. (Blu-ray)

WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971)

Just in time for its 50th Anniversary, Warner Bros. yet again graces us with a stunning 4K disc of a beloved classic, this time in WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. While this disc sports no new bonus features, what you will find here is perhaps the most glorious treatment we’ll ever get for this film, which has for years only been shown in the (slightly) wrong aspect ratio, even as it arrived in HD several years ago. For the uninitiated, this bright and cheery technicolor dreamboat of a film tells the story of Charlie, a young boy in merry old England who goes to school by day and delivers newspapers – also by day – to support his mother and all four of his non ambulatory grandparents. Magically, Charlie wins the opportunity to visit the mysterious Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, a prize sought after by nearly every human being on the planet. Once behind the gates, a cast of characters join Charlie and Grandpa Joe (who can all of a sudden walk after Charlie wins his prize) on a journey to discover that a kind heart is a far finer possession than a sweet tooth. (4K UHD, Blu-ray)

THE WRAITH (1986)

Packed to the brim with absurd car races, semi-famous character actors and 1980s pop and rock hits, THE WRAITH comes to Blu-ray in the US for the very first time in a special Collector’s Series disc from Lionsgate. Set in a small Arizona town in which every resident is either a teenager or a cop, Jamie dies a horrible death before mysteriously returning from the dead as a supernatural, or possibly alien-created, street-racer driving an invulnerable supercar. His intent: to take revenge on the marauding gang of car-racing delinquents who murdered him. If you like cars and trucks and things that go boom, take a ride with THE WRAITH. (Blu-ray)
