First up this week, the Heroes at the Criterion Collection have released Karel Reisz’s film of John Fowles’ great postmodern romance THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT’S WOMAN (@ BLU), adapted for the screen by Harold Pinter. Rather than a straight translation, this movie adds a film-within-a-film conceit in which Meryl Streep plays both a disgraced mid-19th century woman and an actress playing her in a film being made about her story in the present day. She’s joined by Jeremy Irons, also in a dual role. Of course their story runs parallel to that of the characters they play.

 

Then we’ve got something really cool, the first season of TV drama THE KNICK (BLU). Clive Owen plays the cocaine-addicted chief surgeon at Manhattan’s Knickerbocker hospital at the turn of the 20th century. Steven Soderbergh directs every episode of this incredible series.

 

As for the rest, don’t forget to check out the following: Criterion Eclipse has released AGNES VARDA IN CALIFORNIA (@), a collection of rare documentaries by the queen of the French New Wave. The original 1931 THE FRONT PAGE (@ BLU) blu-ray is lovingly presented by the Library of Congress. Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara in buddy comedy HOT PURSUIT (BLU). BBC’s magic-infused series JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL (BLU) is here. Wes Craven’s cult classic THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS (@ BLU) is finally out on blu-ray. WAR-GODS OF THE DEEP (@ BLU) finds Vincent Price in a secret underwater city. And you can watch teenagers get haunted on Skype by a deadly vengeful ghost in the surprisingly effective UNFRIENDED (BLU).
