FACELESS (1987)

For his 1988 big-budget EuroSleaze classic inspired by Eyes Without a Face, director Jess Franco brought together an international all-star cast — including Helmut Berger (THE DAMNED), Brigitte Lahaie (THE FEMALE EXECUTIONER), Chris Mitchum (SUMMERTIME KILLER), Stéphane Audran (COUP DE TORCHON), Caroline Munro (MANIAC) and Telly Savalas — for a glossily depraved tale of disfigurement, dismemberment, libidinous brutes, Nazi surgeons, Parisian discos, face-ripping, throat-stabbing, eyeball-piercing and what may be Uncle Jess’ most rewardingly ambiguous ending ever. (BLU-RAY + 4KULTRAHD)

FAYA DAYI (2021) (CRITERION)

A sublime work of personal vision, the debut feature by the Mexican Ethiopian filmmaker Jessica Beshir is a hypnotic documentary immersion in the world of Ethiopia’s Oromo and Harari communities, places where one commodity—khat, a euphoria-inducing plant once prized for its supposedly mystical properties—holds sway over the rituals and rhythms of everyday life. As if under the influence of the drug itself, Faya dayi unfurls as intoxicating, trance-state cinema, capturing intimate moments in the existence of everyone from the harvesters of the crop to people lost in its narcotic haze to a desperate but determined younger generation searching for an escape from the region’s political strife. The director’s exquisite monochrome cinematography—each frame a masterpiece sculpted from light and shadow—and the film’s time-bending, elliptical editing create a ravishing sensory experience that hovers between consciousness and dreaming. (BLU-RAY and DVD)

FEMALE EXECUTIONER (1986)

Legendary adult film performer Brigitte Lahaie launched her mainstream acting career — and subsequently became a French cultural icon — with this 1986 Parisian exploitation hit. Lahaie is Detective Martine Savignac, a tough vice cop who specializes in busting the most extreme pornographers. But when a porno queenpin snatches her kid sister for revenge, Martine will take on a city full of pimps, pushers, human traffickers, the Chinese mob and every man she can. (BLU-RAY)

LUX AETERNA (2019)

Part meta dig at film industry sexism, but assuredly all horror movie, Gaspar Noé’s split-screen experimental entry casts Béatrice Dalle and Charlotte Gainsbourg as fictionalized versions of themselves-and director and lead for a fright flick about witches. As they deal with genre expectations and off-camera travails, it becomes apparent that the stake-burning climax is going to literally go to hell. Abbey Lee, Claude-Emmanuelle Gajan-Maull, Félix Maritaud also star. (DVD)

MATA HARI (1985)

Dutch goddess Sylvia Kristel (Emmanuelle Trilogy, The Nude Bomb) is the ultimate spy-vamp, Mata Hari. It is her destiny to beguile men and women alike, in an era when the shadow of World War I endangers every liaison. From the Folies Bergère in Paris to the sinister Fraulein Doktor’s office in Berlin to an orgiastic party in Madrid, Mata Hari weaves her spell between enemy camps and between satin sheets leaving behind her broken hearts…and lifeless bodies. The stellar cast include Oliver Tobias (The Stud, Arabian Adventure), Christopher Cazenove (Heat and Dust, Aces: Iron Eagle III), Gottfried John (Goldeneye, The Ogre) and Vernon Dobtcheff (The Day of the Jackal, Jude). ROLLERBABIES / MOUNT OF VENUS (1975) (XXX)

Carter Stevens’ loving tribute to sci-fi pulp and comic books is a light and breezy comedy and stars Terri Hall (Story of Joanna).

Sublimely goofy and starring Georgina Spelvin, Jamie Gillis, Kim Pope, and Eric Edwards, MOUNT OF VENUS is equal parts laughs and explicit action. (BLU-RAY)
