New Releases for February 2!

First up is BRIDGE OF SPIES (@ BLU), the latest from everyone’s favorite cinematic dads, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Based on a true story, Hanks plays a New York lawyer pressed into service by the federal government to conduct the legal defense of an accused Soviet spy, and before too long he finds himself embroiled in a risky attempt to make a prisoner exchange behind the Berlin Wall. This is a low-key kind of spy story, less a thriller than a morality tale. Spielberg makes filmmaking seem so effortless that you might be fooled into thinking there’s not much going on here, but this is a subtle masterpiece. Screenplay by the Coen Brothers!

Then, from David Simon, creator of THE WIRE, comes SHOW ME A HERO (@ BLU), about a local politician in a New York suburb mired in a controversy over public housing that uncovers deep-seated racism in the community and puts his political career in jeopardy. Like BRIDGE OF SPIES this is a quiet, detailed true story about the political and emotional costs of doing the right thing.
