BARTLEBY (BLU-RAY) (1970)

Based on Herman Melville’s celebrated short story ‘Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street’, Anthony Friedmann’s unduly neglected film relocates the action to 1970s London and stars Oscar-winner Paul Scofield (A Man for All Seasons), John McEnery (Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet), and Thorley Walters (Hammer’s The Phantom of the Opera). When a young office clerk, Bartleby (McEnery), becomes increasingly defeated by the pressures of modern life, he gradually opts out of all forms of social engagement and his frustrated employer (Scofield) does all he can to stop him from withdrawing entirely into his own world. Superbly acted and exquisitely photographed, Bartleby is a rare gem of 1970s British cinema. Presented in a brand new restoration from a 4K scan of the original negative, this wry and complex drama makes its worldwide debut on Blu-ray accompanied by a range of new and archival extra features. Recommended if you find the story difficult to get through!

Transcending polemic, renowned director Ann Hui takes a deeply humanistic approach to a harrowing and urgent subject with searing contemporary resonance.

With little information to go on besides the presence of a strange man-made substance in the cadaver’s flesh, Bigelow and Mortis attempt to piece together the mystery, which eventually leads them to a chemical plant, wherein Mortis, true to his name, winds up killed by a hulking zombie. But who’s better to fight zombie criminals than a zombie cop?

JULIEN DUVIVIER IN THE 1920s (BLU-RAY) (2021)

One of the most prolific and technically proficient filmmakers in cinema history, Julien Duvivier was idolized by the likes of directors Jean Renoir, Ingmar Bergman, and Orson Welles. Duvivier’s expressive use of the camera was primarily created under the influence of poetic realist style – in fact he did much to establish the technical and aesthetic standards of French poetic realism, which won him international acclaim. For a time, he was among cinema’s most celebrated directors, receiving nominations and top prizes at notable international film competitions, including the Berlin International Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, the National Board of Review, and New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

Assembled in this Blu-ray disc collection are nine of Julien Duvivier’s deeply moving and imaginative early feature films from the late 1920s that showcase his innovative and prominent contribution to film history. Red Head (Poil de Carotte, 1925) and Revelation aka The Agony of Jerusalem (L’Agonie de Jérusalem, 1927) depict characters grappling with challengingly painful life choices that many viewers will relate to. The Wedding of Mademoiselle Beulemans (Le mariage de mademoiselle Beulemans, 1927) and Mother Hummingbird (Mama Colibri, 1930) are both engrossing dramas of forbidden love, while The Whirlwind of Paris (Le Tourbillon de Paris, 1928) and The Miraculous Life of Thérèse Martin (La Vie miraculeuse de Thérèse Martin, 1929) portray characters pursuing their dreams and aspirations at any cost. The Mystery of the Eiffel Tower (Le Mystère de la tour Eiffel, 1928), The Divine Voyage (La Divine Croisière, 1928), and Ladies’ Paradise (Au bonheur des dames, 1930) are comprised of familial conflicts surrounding money, betrayal, and love. MONSTER OF CAMP SUNSHINE + HONEYMOON OF TERROR (BLU-RAY) (1964/1961)

THE MONSTER OF CAMP SUNSHINE: Shot by anonymous maniacs in New York, this is a trash-art berserker that feels like what would happen if a 1980s slasher was teleported inside of a 1960s nudist film. A nurse and fashion model head to Camp Sunshine for a weekend of fun, sun, and cigarettes. But little do they know that Hugo, the camp’s gardener, has been transformed into an ax-wielding psychopath after drinking radioactive water!
