AIR DOLL (2009)

A present-day fable for the increasing disconnect we find in urban life, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Air Doll transports the Galatea myth to present day Tokyo. A life-size air doll (Bae DoonaThe Host) lives in a shabby apartment in Tokyo. She cannot speak, nor can she move. But she is the only companion her middle-aged master has. He talks to her, puts her in a bath, and makes love with her every day after he returns from work. This routine life is disrupted when fantasy turns into reality. The air doll suddenly comes to life, filled with a soul. Like a newborn baby, she doesn’t understand what is going on around her, but she sees a world waiting to be explored outside the apartment. Eventually venturing to the outside world, the air doll is fascinated by everything she sees, and though she meets many people in all walks of life, they can’t seem to provide her an answer to what “being alive” means. When the air doll wanders into a video store, her world is forever changed. She meets Junichi (Arata IuraAfter Life), the clerk, and immediately falls in love with him. The air doll begins working in the store and everyday, she and Junichi become closer.  (BLU-RAY)

FIDDLER’S JOURNEY TO THE BIG SCREEN (2022)

The fall of 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of Fiddler on the Roof, the film Pauline Kael (The New Yorker) called “the most powerful movie musical ever made.” Narrated by Jeff Goldblum, FIDDLER’S JOURNEY TO THE BIG SCREEN captures the humor and drama of director Norman Jewison’s quest to recreate the lost world of Jewish life in Tsarist Russia and re-envision the beloved stage hit as a wide-screen epic. Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Daniel Raim puts us in the director’s chair and in Jewison’s heart and mind, drawing on behind-the-scenes footage and never-before-seen stills as well as original interviews with Jewison, Topol (Tevye), composer John Williams, production designer Robert F. Boyle, film critic Kenneth Turan, lyricist Sheldon Harnick, and actresses Rosalind Harris, Michele Marsh, and Neva Small (Tevye’s daughters). This inspiring film explores how the experience of making Fiddler deepened Jewison as an artist and revived his soul. (DVD)

FINAL FLESH (2009)

FINAL FLESH is unlike anything you’ve ever seen—on Earth or other places. In the early 2000s, Vernon Chatman (co-founder of the PFFR art collective, co-creator of WONDER SHOWZEN and XAVIER: RENEGADE ANGEL, and producer of SOUTH PARK) wrote a four-part screenplay about a family who lives adjacent to the Ground Zero of a thermonuclear disaster. Instead of sharing the finished script with Hollywood, Chatman sent each part to four different companies that specialize in custom adult fetish videos. And FINAL FLESH was born. Like the custom song poem craze of the 1970s, this metaphysical brain-stabber is an outsider miracle of Biblical proportions. Filled with nudity, brilliant sight gags, rubber monster masks, inventive toilet humor, and no sex, this is a surrealist spectacle of the highest order. (BLU-RAY)

FISH & CAT (2013)

Shahram Mokri’s second feature combines formal experimentation with terror and a sly sense of humor, perfectly blended in this highly unusual piece of Iranian film history. (BLU-RAY)

Interspersed among the interviews and archival footage are four dramatized chapters from a pulp novel, “Forbidden Love”: Laura leaves her hick town and heads for the city, where she meets Mitch in a bar. Sparks fly, and so do laughter and joy. Ann Bannon, one of the writers of those paperback novels about forbidden love, talks about the genre. (BLU-RAY)

MARX CAN WAIT (2021)

In his most achingly personal film to date, legendary Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio uses the occasion of a family reunion in his hometown of Piacenza to excavate and discuss a traumatic event: the death his twin brother Camillo, who committed suicide in the late ’60s at age 29. Through detailed conversations with his siblings, archival footage providing context about 20th-century Italian leftist politics, and occasional clips from his films, many of which were in some way imbued with this defining family tragedy, Bellocchio conducts a personal and historical exorcism.
