First up, the Heroes at the Criterion Collection have brought us no less than THREE different cuts of Terrence Malick’s THE NEW WORLD (@ BLU), his telling of the story of Pocahontas and just one of his multiple masterpieces. Malick trimmed the film by about 15 minutes after its initial limited release, and then for home video made a much longer version, and all three are included here along with the usual trove of extras.

 

Then, one of the most interesting and important releases of the year, Kino’s PIONEERS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CINEMA (@ BLU) box set. With 12 feature films and 24 shorts, plus multiple trailers and other extras spread over 5 discs, this amazing set presents these groundbreaking works — many of them thought lost — and puts them in valuable historical context.

 

As for the rest, don’t forget to check out the following: Arrow has Ken Russell’s notorious erotic thriller CRIMES OF PASSION (@ BLU). Vinegar Syndrome brings us three blaxplo classics, Rudy Ray Moore’s PETEY WHEATSTRAW: THE DEVIL’S SON-IN-LAW (@ BLU), and a double feature of Matt Cimber’s THE CANDY TANGERINE MAN and LADY COCOA (@ BLU). One of the best Hong Kong action films of the decade, KILL ZONE 2 (@ BLU). THE INVITATION (@ BLU) takes place at the worst dinner party ever. Humphrey Bogart is a tenacious reporter in DEADLINE U.S.A. (@ BLU) First-person POV action in HARDCORE HENRY (@ BLU). Neil Young and Devo team up on the soundtrack to bonker’s 80’s head trip HUMAN HIGHWAY (@ BLU). DEATH WISH 2 (@ BLU) is even sleazier than the original.
