PARTY AND THE GUESTS (1965)

A group of friends on an afternoon picnic are accosted by mysterious authority figures and compelled to join a lavish banquet in the woods. Jan Němec’s surreal and sinister fable is a barbed satire of authoritarianism and conformity, as each of the ‘guests’ find their place among the revellers, succumbing to the will of their menacing hosts.

Distinguished by being ‘banned forever’ by Czech authorities, Nemec’s disquieting film was considered the most politically dangerous film made during the short flowering of Czechoslovak cinema in the 1960’s. (BLU-RAY)

UFO INCIDENT (1975)

James Earl Jones (The Great White Hope) and Estelle Parsons (Don’t Drink the Water) star as Barney and Betty Hill, husband-and-wife survivors of an alien abduction, in this engrossing look at one of the most controversial and carefully documented cases of an extraterrestrial encounter in U.S. history. The Hills claim that, on the 19th of September, 1961, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, they were taken aboard a saucer-like spacecraft and examined medically by mysterious humanoid beings with grayish skin. The UFO Incident describes with fascinating detail the couple’s crippling anxiety and nightmarish visions following the experience, during which they both suffered from amnesia. Directed by Richard A. Colla (Fuzz, TV’s Battlestar Galactica), this strange-but-true story is based on The Interrupted Journey, John G. Fuller’s bestselling account of the actual testimony made by the Hills while under hypnosis. (BLU-RAY)

VIRGIN SUICIDES (1999) (Criterion Collection)

With this debut feature, Sofia Coppola announced her singular vision, exploring the aesthetics of femininity while illuminating the interior lives of young women. An adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’s highly acclaimed first novel, The Virgin Suicides conjures the ineffable melancholy of teenage longing and ennui in its story of the suicides of the five Lisbon sisters, stifled by the rules of their overprotective religious parents—as told through the collective memory of a group of men who were boys at the time and still yearn to understand what happened. Evoking its 1970s suburban setting through ethereal cinematography by Ed Lachman and an atmospheric score by Air, and featuring a magnetic performance by Kirsten Dunst, the film secured a place for its director in the landscape of American independent cinema and has become a coming-of-age touchstone. (BLU-RAY and 4K ULTRA HD)
