Over the course of the trip, they bond over memories of the past, grapple with fears of the unknown, and fuss over their sick dog. Unspoken tensions arise and the film builds emotional momentum as it slowly reveals the furtive purpose for their journey. The result is a humanist drama that offers an authentic, raw, and deeply sincere observation of an Iranian family preparing to part with one of their own. (DVD)

HOTEL FEAR (1978)

The story takes place in Italy towards the end of World War Two, in a run-down hotel by the shores of a large lake. A strange assortment of guests are staying there. Rosa, a teenage girl played by Leonora Fani, works with her mother, Marta, trying to keep the hotel functioning. Due to the war and the frequent bombing raids that take place, the hotel is on its last legs and even finding food for the guests is a major problem. Rosa writes letters to send to her father who is off fighting in the war. Rosa’s mother dies unexpectedly, and suddenly the girl finds herself at the mercy of the sexually rapacious and insane hotel guests. After a vicious rape, Rosa despairs. She calls on her absent father to avenge her. And it seems her call is answered when the guests die violently at the hands of a masked, gloved killer. But who really is this mystery assassin? And is Rosa losing her grip on reality?

This was director Francesco Barilli’s second feature film, after the highly regarded PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK. Due to distribution problems the film has been hard to see. It has never been released in the US before and this is its world premier on Blu-ray. (BLU-RAY)

RAVAGER, THE/BUSHWHACKER, THE (1970)

THE RAVAGER and THE BUSHWHACKER represent the last hurrah for rough and tumble 60s style sexploitation before hardcore sex films completely took over the market. These two films are basically the last gasp, the final push on the envelope towards more extreme, horror-oriented fare, and in this they were perhaps too extreme for the raincoat brigade. After their brief theatrical runs, both disappeared for decades until unearthed by Something Weird Video in the 2000s.

THE RAVAGER was the brainchild of Belgian cinematic weirdo Charles Nizet, whose life was as bizarre as any film he made. But THE RAVAGER is perhaps his craziest movie, and stars Pierre Agostino, a regular in the films of Ray Dennis Steckler from the same period, as a PTSD stricken Vietnam vet with a peculiar kink for peeking on couples making love and then blowing them to smithereens with homemade bombs.

THE BUSHWHACKER was made by long-time exploitation maven Byron Mabe, who directed the classic SHE-FREAK. After their plane goes down somewhere in the deserts of the American southwest, a party of one alpha male and three lusty ladies are pursued through the wilds by an insane, coonskin-cap-wearing killer with an insatiable taste for female flesh. ROUGE (1988) (CRITERION)

Cantopop superstars Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung display the androgynous magnetism that made them icons as doomed lovers in this emblematic film of Hong Kong’s Second New Wave, directed by pioneering queer melodrama master Stanley Kwan. Rouge bridges past and present in its tragic romance between a humble courtesan and the wayward scion of a wealthy family, who embrace death by suicide pact amid the opulent teahouses of 1930s Hong Kong. Fifty years later, she returns to the city-state to find him, drawing a young contemporary couple (Alex Man and Emily Chu) into her quest to rekindle a passion that may be as illusory as time itself. With its lush mise-en-scène and transcendently melancholy mood, this sensuous ghost story is an exquisite, enduringly resonant elegy for both lost love and vanishing history. (BLU-RAY / DVD)

SHAFT (1971) (CRITERION/3 DISKS)

While the Black Power movement was reshaping America, trailblazing director Gordon Parks made this groundbreaking blockbuster, which helped launch the blaxploitation era and gave the screen a new kind of badder-than-bad action hero in John Shaft (Richard Roundtree, in a career-defining role), a streetwise New York City private eye who is as tough with criminals as he is tender with his lovers. After Shaft is recruited to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Harlem mob boss (Moses Gunn) from Italian gangsters, he finds himself in the middle of a rapidly escalating uptown vs. downtown turf war. A vivid time capsule of seventies Manhattan in all its gritty glory that has inspired sequels and multimedia reboots galore, the original Shaft is studded with indelible elements—from Roundtree’s sleek leather fashions to the iconic funk and soul score by Isaac Hayes.
