It’s the first New Release Tuesday here at our new Blog!
BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc
3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory
@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details).
First up, the Heroes at the Criterion Collection have brought us the great Terry Gilliam’s modern (sort-of) fantasy (sort-of) THE FISHER KING (@ BLU). Jeff Bridges plays a miserable, disillusioned radio shock-jock who inadvertently helps cause a horrible tragedy that sends him into a spiral of shame and depression. Years later, he crosses paths with Parry (Robin Williams, in one of his best performances), a homeless man who was also irrevocably changed by that same event. This is one of Gilliam’s most relatively restrained works and also one of his most uplifting. It tends to be obscured next to his more popular work like BRAZIL or TIME BANDITS, so it’s wonderful that Criterion is giving it such attention.
Then, we’d be derelict in our duty if we didn’t tell you about the new blu-ray of cult action classic STONE COLD (@ BLU), starring former Seahawk Brian Bosworth as a badass lone wolf cop who plays by his own rules (stop us if you’ve heard this one). The Boz goes undercover with a group of white supremacist bikers plotting to blow up the Mississippi Supreme Court! This is a terrific piece of cheese you simply have to see.
As for the rest, don’t forget to check out the following: Criterion also has THE BRIDGE (@ BLU), one of the first films to come to the US from Germany after WWII. Hayao Miyazaki’s first feature, CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO (@ BLU). Soldiers vs. werewolves in DOG SOLDIERS (@ BLU). Jack Hill’s wild demolition-derby classic PIT STOP (@ BLU) from Arrow. Seattle band Tennis Pro heads out on tour in local film BIG IN JAPAN. TIMBUKTU is a searing Oscar-nominated drama from Mauritania. Classic exploitation on blu-ray with THE THING WITH TWO HEADS (@ BLU) and blaxploitation zombie flick SUGAR HILL (@ BLU). Vintage German shock cinema with DER TODESKING (@ BLU). Stephen King’s NEEDFUL THINGS (@ BLU). Shot-in-Seattle pickpocket comedy HARRY IN YOUR POCKET (@ BLU). And last but not least, the 1977 version of THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU (@ BLU), starring Burt Lancaster.
