BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD (1983)

The last great film from Spanish horror legend Paul Naschy. Although he would go on making and planning films until his death in 2009, he never again attempted the epic sweep and grandeur of this 10th entry into the saga of Waldemar Daninsky, a man afflicted by the curse of lycanthropy.

In this film we get for the first time an origin story of how the Daninsky curse began back in the 10th century. We then move forward to 16th century Japan where Daninsky has travelled in search of a cure to his affliction. Co-starring Japanese stage and screen veteran Shigeru Amachi, and shot in the studios of Toshiro Mifune, THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD is a highly successful and colourful melding of European werewolf legends and dark Japanese fantasy. It features a fight between werewolf and tiger, an evil scarlet-cloaked witch who imprisons Daninsky, a sword fight with a troupe of ghost samurai, and many other unforgettable scenes. (BLU-RAY)

CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (1974) (CRITERION/2 DISKS)

Whiling away a summer in Paris, director Jacques Rivette, working in close collaboration with his stars and coconspirators Juliet Berto and Dominique Labourier, set out to rewrite the rules of cinema in the spirit of pure play—moviemaking as an anything-goes romp through the labyrinths of imagination. The result is one of the most exuberantly inventive and utterly enchanting films of the French New Wave, in which Julie (Labourier), a daydreaming librarian, meets Céline (Berto), an enigmatic magician, and together they become the heroines of a time-warping adventure involving a haunted house, psychotropic candy, and a murder-mystery melodrama. Incorporating allusions to everything from Lewis Carroll to Louis Feuillade, Céline and Julie Go Boating is both one of the all-time-great hangout comedies and a totally unique, enveloping cinematic dream space that delights in the endless pleasures and possibilities of stories. Eight years later, Mitsuo Murayama s exciting The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly tells the story of a series of mysterious murders where the only clue is strange buzzing noise at the scene of the crime could this be linked to secret wartime experiments in shrinking humans to the size of insects? LAST REMAKE OF BEAU GESTE (1977)

It’s a spoof to end all spoofs as comedy legend Marty Feldman (Young Frankenstein) shatters the Gary Cooper/French Foreign Legion classic in The Last Remake of Beau Geste. Set in England and Morocco in 1906, Feldman’s “remake” mocks all the do-or-die extravaganzas we’ve known and loved as he portrays Digby, identical twin brother to Michael York’s (The Island of Dr. Moreau) stalwart Beau Geste. Joining in the desert lunacy are a vast array of stars including Peter Ustinov (Death on the Nile), Terry-Thomas (Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies), Ann-Margret (52 Pick-Up) as the boys’ seductive stepmother and James Earl Jones (Star Wars) as Sheik Abdul the Disgusting. Feldman co-wrote, stars and makes his outrageous directorial debut with this zany comedy which, as the title suggests, threatens to end the whole romance-adventure genre once and for all. The hilarious cast also includes Trevor Howard (Kidnapped), Henry Gibson (The Long Goodbye), Roy Kinnear (How I Won the War), Spike Milligan (The Bed Sitting Room), Avery Schreiber (Scavenger Hunt) and Hugh Griffith (Kind Hearts and Coronets).
