M3GAN (2022)

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams, Get Out), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. As Gemma faces pressure at work from her boss (Ronny Chieng, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) to deliver a finished version of M3GAN, she suddenly becomes the unprepared caretaker of her newly orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House). Gemma decides to pair the M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences. (BLU-RAY and DVD)

MAN WITHOUT A WORLD (1991)

The Man Without A World is a bold independent American film, the conceptual masterpiece of an important artist, a meditation on history, and a very funny and beautiful melodrama. Credited to the legendary (and imaginary) 1920s Soviet director, Yevgeny Antinov, the film was actually made by Eleanor Antin in 1991. This silent drama set in a Jewish shtetl, was Antin’s “love letter” to her mother, who had been an actress in the Yiddish theater. When a gypsy caravan and its lovely dancer (played by Antin herself) arrive in the village, the life of the shtetl dwellers — including Zionists, religious zealots, socialists, and lovers — is upended. But as the Jewish villagers pursue their dreams for the future, the Angel of Death is ever near…

This Blu-ray release also includes two other historical conjuring acts from Eleanor Antin. From the Archives of Modern Art (1987) is a series of short, sometimes ribald, comic films from the “lost years” of ballerina Eleanor Antinova. For The Last Night of Rasputin (1989), Antinova and her husband Yevgeny Antinov (both personas of Antin) joined forces to film the final orgy and dreadful end of the notorious monk, Rasputin, on the eve of the Russian Revolution. Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster star in one of the greatest and most engrossing film noir thrillers ever put to celluloid.

Young, rich, bedridden Leona Stevenson (Stanwyck) dials a telephone number one night and overhears two men plotting the murder of an unidentified woman. She becomes frantic. Her terror is intensified by mysterious calls from an old college rival and a friend of her father. With time running out, Leona pieces evidence together that leads her to suspect that it is her husband (Lancaster) who wants her murdered. Sorry, Wrong Number is a classic, extraordinary example of cumulative suspense and sheer terror.  (BLU-RAY)

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS S.1 (2022)

Spun from the second season of “Star Trek Discovery,” and set in the same time frame predating the original series, this applauded effort follows Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) as he helms the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise with the assistance of science officer Spock (Ethan Peck), nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and first officer Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), b/k/a Number One.
