The big one this week is Martin Scorsese’s SILENCE (@ BLU). Based on the novel by Shusako Endo (previously made into a film by Masahiro Shinoda), it’s the story of Jesuit priests attempting to spread Christianity in Japan, where it had been outlawed. This is possibly Scorsese’s final word (and his masterpiece) on faith and sacrifice, themes that have played a huge role in his career. One of the best movies of 2016.

As for the rest, don’t forget to check out the following: The Heroes at the Criterion Collection have Antonioni’s existentialist mystery BLOW-UP (@ BLU). Four new ones from Arrow Academy: Slime mold documentary THE CREEPING GARDEN (@ BLU), Elio Petri’s little-seen PROPERTY IS NO LONGER A THEFT (@ BLU), beloved arthouse classic CINEMA PARADISO (@ BLU), and STORY OF SIN (@ BLU), some madness from Walerian Borowczyk. 20TH CENTURY WOMEN (@ BLU) is the latest from underrated director Mike Mills. Return to the Potterverse with FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM (@ BLU 3D). A giant tree-man helps a child deal with grief in A MONSTER CALLS (BLU). Some 50’s greaser nostalgia in THE WANDERERS (@ BLU). Be careful what you wish for with the WISHMASTER (@ BLU) Collection. WITCHTRAP (@ BLU) is some cheesy 80’s horror goodness. Mark Wahlberg hunts the Boston Marathon bombers in PATRIOT’S DAY (BLU). Vintage 3D in SEPTEMBER STORM (@ BLU 3D). And last but not least, the great David Attenborough is back with PLANET EARTH II (@ BLU).
