New Releases for May 24!

It’s another glorious New Release Tuesday!

It’s a light week this week but that doesn’t mean the new stuff isn’t typically great! First up, the Heroes a the Criterion Collection have brought us Robert Altman’s trenchant Hollywood satire THE PLAYER (@ BLU). When a studio exec murders a jealous writer he finds himself facing off against tenacious cops, devious rivals, and a massive cast of stars cameoing as themselves. One of the best movies about the movie business ever made.

Then, Michael Mann’s early masterpiece MANHUNTER (@ BLU). Based on Thomas Harris’ novel RED DRAGON, it’s the first cinematic appearance of Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter, here portrayed by Brian Cox instead of Anthony Hopkins (in a performance some folks say is the better one).

As for the rest, don’t forget to check out the following: A double feature of Italian Giallo with KILLER DAMES: TWO GOTHIC CHILLERS BY EMILIO MIRAGLIA (@ BLU). Jean-Luc Godard’s A MARRIED WOMAN (@ BLU) would make a weird double feature with George Sanders’ womanizing in THE PRIVATE AFFAIRS OF BEL AMI (@ BLU). Derek Zoolander is back in ZOOLANDER NO. 2 (BLU). Vintage noir with THE CHASE (@ BLU). The BUSTER KEATON: SHORTS COLLECTION 1917-1923 (@ BLU) is five discs of the king of silent comedy. And lastly there’s some good old fashioned Edgar Rice Burroughs adventure with THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT (@ BLU).
