It’s the first New Release Tuesday of May!

The big release this week is a nearly lost masterpiece of African-American cinema, LOSING GROUND (@ BLU). This 1982 film is apparently the first feature-length film directed by a black American woman. It made festival rounds at the time, but strangely never even received a New York City theatrical run. Milestone films has restored the film from its original 16mm camera negatives so that this landmark can finally get the attention it so richly deserves.

 

As for the rest, it’s a light week, but don’t forget to check out the following: Jennifer Lawrence invents a revolutionary mop in JOY (BLU). The Heroes at the Criterion Collection have a lovely solo blu-ray upgrade of EASY RIDER (@ BLU). ARABIAN NIGHTS (@ BLU) is a gorgeous, epic three-film adaptation from Portugal. Warner Archive has a new blu-ray of WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (@ BLU) Vintage noir with A KISS BEFORE DYING (@ BLU). There’s a 20th anniversary edition of INDEPENDENCE DAY (@ BLU). And lastly a special 3D release of DOCTOR WHO: DARK WATER / DEATH IN HEAVEN (BLU 3D).
