New Releases for November 24!

It’s the last New Release Tuesday of November, and the last one before Thanksgiving!

First up, the Heroes at the Criterion Collection have brought us a lovely new blu-ray of one of Akira Kurosawa’s many masterpieces, IKIRU (@ BLU), about an aging bureaucrat (the great Takashi Shimura) who discovers that he has a terminal illness and decides to dedicate the remainder of his life to something meaningful: building a children’s playground. It’s a bittersweet look at what it means to be alive, and one of the most compassionate films ever made.

Then, there’s THE QUAY BROTHERS: COLLECTED SHORT FILMS (@ BLU), an awesome new disc bringing together all of the short work of these master animators. Gorgeous new transfers and loaded with extra features.

As for the rest, don’t forget to check out the following: Criterion also has the groundbreaking 1967 Bob Dylan documentary DON’T LOOK BACK (@ BLU). Arrow has some vintage Italian crime with WAKE UP AND KILL (@ BLU). There’s little-seen John Ford South Seas adventure THE HURRICANE (@ BLU). An idiot stoner finds out he’s actually a trained CIA sleeper agent in AMERICAN ULTRA (BLU). Halloween may be over but there’s still more spooky stuff, with blu-rays of GHOST STORY (@ BLU), 1961 3D freakout THE MASK (@ BLU 3D), and THE INCREDIBLE TWO-HEADED TRANSPLANT (@ BLU), which comes with an optional RIFFTRAX commentary. Jonathan Demme’s latest work of wonder is RICKI AND THE FLASH (BLU). Old Blue Eyes gets a massive tribute documentary with SINATRA: ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL (@). There’s also the DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIALS (@ BLU), which has every new-generation Christmas episode and also comes with a fancy Sonic Screwdriver! And for the kids there’s the awesome SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE (@ BLU).
