HIGH SIERRA (1941) (BLU-RAY) (DVD)

A career criminal plagued by his checkered past, Roy longs for a simpler life, but after getting sprung on parole, he falls in with a band of thieves for one last heist in the Sierra Nevada. Exhausted by a recent case, Sherlock (Cook) dispatches Watson (Moore) to Baskerville Hall to face a legendary demonic dog. But while Watson scours the scary moors, Holmes is busy visiting his mum (who calls him “Sherl”), interviewing the sole applicant for a “runner of errands” (a one-legged man), and dropping in at a Victorian massage parlor. Will the case be solved? Will the masseuse use salve? Only one thing’s certain: This rabidly funny comedy is a howling good time! Cult filmmaker Paul Morrissey (Flesh for Frankenstein, Blood for Dracula) co-wrote (with Cook and Moore) and directed this outrageous spoof. The hilarious cast includes Denholm Elliott (Percy), Joan Greenwood (The Man in the White Suit), Hugh Griffith (Kind Hearts and Coronets), Irene Handl (The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes), Terry-Thomas (The Green Man), Max Wall (Jabberwocky), Kenneth Williams (the Carry On films), Roy Kinnear (How I Won the War) and Spike Milligan (The Last Remake of Beau Geste).

LEGEND [LIMITED EDITION] (1985) (BLU-RAY)

After changing the face of science fiction cinema forever with Alien and Blade Runner, director Ridley Scott turned his visionary eye to the fantasy genre, teaming with writer William Hjortsberg (Angel Heart) to create a breathtaking cinematic fairytale with one of the screen’s most astonishingly rendered depictions of Evil. In an idyllic, sun-dappled forest, the pure-hearted Jack (Tom Cruise) takes his true love Princess Lili (Mia Sara) to see a pair of unicorns frolicking at the forest’s edge. Little do they know, however, that the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry, in a remarkable make-up designed by The Thing’s Rob Bottin) has dispatched his minions to capture the unicorns and sever their horns so that he may plunge the world into everlasting night. After Lili and the unicorns are taken prisoner, Jack must team with a group of forest creatures and descend into Darkness’ subterranean lair to face off against the devilish creature before it is too late. Despite a troubled production in which the elaborate full-size forest set was accidentally incinerated and a lengthy post-production that resulted in multiple versions of the film (with competing music scores by Jerry Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream), Legend has since been restored to Scott’s original cut and embraced by generations of film fans eager to see a master director’s unique vision of a world beyond our imagination. Includes TONS of special features!

The mismatched pair would prove surprisingly able in cracking the hardest cases, in this clever ITV offering; James Murray, Jack Riddiford, Pearl Chanda also starred.

MISERY (1990) (4K-UHD) (BLU-RAY)

From the mind of Stephen King, the master of horror behind Carrie, The Shining, The Stand and It, comes the terrifying psychological thriller for which Kathy Bates (Dolores Claiborne) won the Academy Award for her iconic, bone-shattering performance. After his car crashes in the mountains during a blinding snowstorm, famous novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan, Thief) is “rescued” from a car crash by Annie Wilkes (Bates), a fan obsessed with the main character in his series of novels. But when Wilkes reads his latest book—and learns he has killed her favorite character—she teaches Sheldon the real meaning of Misery. Injured and isolated far from help, Sheldon engages in a desperate battle of wits with Wilkes as she becomes ever more deranged and violent. Director Rob Reiner (The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men) and screenwriter William Goldman (Marathon Man, All the President’s Men) deliver a white-knuckle suspense tale that features Frances Sternhagen (The Mist), Richard Farnsworth (The Grey Fox) and the great Lauren Bacall (The Big Sleep).

ROADRUNNER-ANTHONY BOURDAIN (2021) (DVD)

VERA CRUZ (1953) (BLU-RAY)

Legendary screen icons Gary Cooper (High Noon, Beau Geste) and Burt Lancaster (The Train, Elmer Gantry) team up for a magnificent, action-packed western from director Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen, The Last Sunset). With sweeping vistas and larger-than-life heroics, it’s a tale as bold and rugged as the characters it so brilliantly depicts. Cooper and Lancaster portray Benjamin Trane and Joe Erin, two daredevil mercenaries who journey to Mexico in search of adventure—and cold hard cash—during the 1866 revolution. But they get more than they bargained for when the wealthy and beautiful Countess Duvarre (Denise Darcel, Westward the Women) hires them to escort her (and a fortune in gold!) to Emperor Maximilian’s fighting forces in Vera Cruz. The trail is fraught with danger, betrayal and murder… and when Ben is swept up in the revolutionaries’ fervor, he and Joe find themselves at odds with the Mexican Army—and each other! Adapted by Roland Kibbee (Valdez Is Coming) and James R.
