ABBOTT ELEMENTARY: SEASON 1 (2021)
In this workplace comedy from writer/executive producer/star Quinta Brunson (A Black Lady Sketch Show) and executive producers Justin Halpern & Patrick Schumacker (Harley Quinn), a group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal — are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds against them, they are determined to help their students succeed. The staff at Abbott Elementary includes Janine (Brunson), an optimistic and slightly naïve second grade teacher; Gregory, a substitute-turned-permanent teacher; Ava, the unprincipled new principal; Jacob, an overtly liberal, try-hard history teacher; Melissa, a tough, longtime teacher with a well-controlled classroom; and Barbara, a highly respected matriarch-like teacher. Though outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children. (DVD)
AIDS SHOW: ARTISTS INVOLVED WITH DEATH AND SURVIVAL (1986)
One of the most important documents of the AIDS epidemic, THE AIDS SHOW was filmed in 1986 in the very early years of the crisis. The AIDS (Artists Involved with Death and Survival) Show deals with the impact of the epidemic on the community most affected by the disease — gay men. This unique work, one of the first films to deal with the subject of AIDS, was based on San Francisco’s long-running Theatre Rhinoceros stage production of the same name. It speaks to everyone who has ever thought about AIDS or any terminal disease. Excerpts from the play have been combined with interviews with the show’s creators and performers, along with a personal narration by the filmmakers — Peter Adair & Rob Epstein — to produce a powerful hybrid of documentary and drama. Preserved by Metropolis Post from the best materials, courtesy of Rob Epstein and Telling Pictures. (DVD)

In The Bat, mystery writer Cornelia van Gorder (Agnes Moorehead, TV’s Bewitched, Hush … Hush, Sweet Charlotte, Citizen Kane) resides in a town terrorized by a mysterious murderer known only as “The Bat,” said to be a man with no face who kills women at night by ripping out their throats with steel claws.
Breaking into Cornelia’s countryside home one night, he releases an actual bat, which bites her maid Lizzy (Lenita Lane, Compliments of the Season, While America Sleeps), sending her into a panic that she has caught “the rabies.” Cornelia calls her doctor, Malcolm Wells (Vincent Price, Edward Scissorhands, House on Haunted Hill, TV’s Batman), who happens to be conducting research on bats.
Little does Cornelia know that the good doctor has an ulterior motive for coming to her assistance—a thief who has stolen $1 million in bank securities has confided in Wells, leading him to believe the stash is hidden within Cornelia’s home. After dispatching with the thief, Wells plots to claim the missing treasure.
When additional break-ins and murders by The Bat continue, local police chief Andy Anderson (Gavin Gordon, Bride of Frankenstein, The Scarlet Empress) comes to the house with suspicions of both Wells and Cornelia’s butler Warner (John Sutton, Jane Eyre, Return of the Fly).

GOING PLACES (1974)
In this controversial and notorious buddy film, director Bertrand Blier (GET OUT YOUR HANDKERCHIEFS) created what critic Pauline Kael described as “an explosively funny erotic farce – both a celebration and a satire of men’s daydreams.” Gerard Depardieu (in the role that would make him an international star) and Patrick Dewaere portray Jean- Claude and Pierrot, two amoral drifters who travel the French countryside committing petty crimes and harassing the women they encounter, including Miou-Miou, Jeanne Moreau, and, in an early role, Isabelle Huppert. Perpetually on the run from the police and the women they encounter, the two are always just one step ahead of death or imprisonment as a result of their crime spree, but, as Kevin Thomas in the LA Times observes, “Blier is interested more in Jean-Claude and Pierrot as sexual chauvinists than as petty criminals, and as they learn to become more considerate lovers they become more likable. Above all, they embody the sure-fire appeal of all movie antiheroes, free-spirits who live entirely for the moment and at all times follow their impulses.” Graced with a justly famous score by Stéphane Grappelli, GOING PLACES remains as shocking and outrageous today as it did upon its initial release. (BLU-RAY)
